The origins of Thornycroft go back to 1864 when John Isaac Thornycroft began building steam driven road vehicles. In 1896, the first Thornycroft vehicle, a steam van, was built in Cheswick, England.

In 1902, the first Thornycroft petrol engine vehicle appeared from the new works at Basingstoke, England and this 3 tonne variant was introduced in 1948.

By 1960, Transport Equipment (Thornycroft) Limited was taken over by AEC and the range was trimmed down to the Nubian model and some special purpose vehicles. Eight years later, the Basingstoke works were sold and all production transferred to Seammell at Watford, England.
