Joe Cook worked for himself since he gained his LGV licence in the early 70s, leaving the building trade in London. He gained valuable experience working for George Reed in Gloucestershire, before subbing continental work for Ralph Davies, covering the Spanish, Italian and Portugese runs with Scanias and Magnums. As profits slowed on the continent, Joe decided to stay in the UK and pull containers out of the East Coast ports. He operated from his own large plot of land in Lincolnshire, where he also lived, basing his 24 strong fleet, including 7 Iveco Stralis AS 480hp 44 tonne GVW units, pulling 6x2s. Joes wife Tammy ran her own sand and gravel business from the same site using two additional small Iveco rigids
